Biography

In 2013 Rebecca had an accident as a result of slipped capital femoral epiphysis, which is a hip condition that causes the ball at the head of the femur to slip off the neck of the bone in a backward direction. Following one of many surgeries, Rebecca was at a hydrotherapy session where her occupational therapist recommended wheelchair basketball. Full of apprehension, Rebecca hesitated before getting involved in the sport. With little to be nervous about, Rebecca finally attended a session in 2015 and fell in love with the sport due to the team atmosphere. It also offered the former dancer and gymnast a way to continue participating in competitive sport. Starting at Conwy Thunder WBC, Rebecca went on to play for Wheelchair Basketball North Wales Knights in the National League and women’s league, contributing to her team’s success winning gold. More success came Rebecca’s way as she was selected to play for Wales at the school games, and junior regionals making history winning silver. In the same season, Rebecca won two gold medals at the National Playoffs in the Division Two and junior competitions. Following all the success of the season, Rebecca was invited to a Great Britain camp where she was invited into the Great Britain academy. With this, Rebecca was then invited to be part of the senior Welsh Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Programme: the squad is training to compete at the Commonwealth Games qualifying tournament. With a taste of the high-performance training environment Cardiff has to offer, Rebecca chose to relocate to Cardiff to study Psychology and pursue her basketball ambitions: “Becoming a student-athlete at Cardiff Met allows me to follow my career aspirations in basketball and beyond. Being a centralised athlete allows me to work closely with the coaches and sport science staff to tactically, technically and physical improve. We have such an exciting team with a variety of experience, and I am so excited to share the court with them to learn from each player.”
