Biography

In 2012 Maddie took a determined stance to participate in wheelchair basketball have watched the GB Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team play in the 2012 London Paralympic Games. Initial participation was through a local inclusion charity who held a ‘fun for all’ session that offered the facilities and equipment to give it a go. Falling in love with the sport’s dynamic energy and competitiveness, Maddie joined local club Hornets coached by Nass Dadkah. Only six months later Maddie was inducted onto the Great Britain junior pathway. Following on from her initial introduction at a Great Britain futures camp, Maddie competed for the Great Britain U24 Women’s squad at the 2018 Continental Clash, and celebrated gold at the 2018 U24 European Championships. Maddie has continued to flourish within the Great Britain programme through her participation in the top tier of the academy and acceleration programme. Collecting two gold and one bronze medal at the junior regionals for the South-East region, this wasn’t enough for Maddie Martin. At the 2019 regionals, Maddie won the British Wheelchair Basketball ‘Female Player of the Year’ award for her outstanding performance at the games. Within the British Wheelchair Basketball domestic leagues Maddie formerly played for the Tornadoes Wheelchair Basketball Club, with support from coach Carl Scott. Now, Maddie will compete in the mixed Premier League for Exeter Otters alongside competing for Archers in the Women’s Premier League. Excited to start her journey with the Archers, Maddie shares: “The Cardiff Met Archers high performance programme staff offers continuous and invaluable support to us as athletes. This support is extended off the basketball court, with time and effort put into helping me with my personal and professional progression and planning for my future beyond and alongside basketball. I know that I will thrive as a basketball player and person here.” We are delighted to have Maddie compete for us as our Vice-Captain in the inaugural season of the league!
